> Some tips in making a secured credit card application

People with bad credit or those that are considered a high risk may find that the fastest and most effective way to establish or re-establish credit is by making a secured credit card application. These secured credit cards are backed by money you have on deposit. How much you must deposit and the credit granted varies and there is a wide range of options and criteria. Therefore, it is important to be aware of certain things when making a secured credit card application.

Firstly, although these cards appear the same as unsecured cards (e.g. Visa and Master Card) many of the costs associated with them are higher. This applies to both the APR (annual percentage rate) and annual renewal fees. Some institutions may even require a fee just to fill out a secured credit card application but this is becoming less common.

As secured credit cards can be an expensive way to have credit you don¡¦t want one just for the convenience of having a credit card. The goal should be to repair your credit. Before you even make the secured credit card application it is best to make sure that the issuer will report the payment information to the credit bureaus.

A secured credit card application will have more lenient standards than that for a regular card but approval is not automatic. Here are some important questions:

- Can I qualify for your card if I have declared bankruptcy in the past?
- Will you report payment history to all three major credit bureaus and will creditors be able to tell that this is a secured credit card?
- Do you accept people with bad credit or just those with no credit?
- Will my line of credit be equal to, less than, or more than my deposit?
- How long will it take for me to become eligible for an unsecured card?

A secured credit card application can be made online. Make sure these questions are answered.
